iPad Addiction & Alcoholism Recovery Treatment App Coming Soon

Serenity Ranch is creating a new method of presenting the
information needed to understand and treat addiction using an

iPad. The iPad is a book sized computer able to present books, movies, audio, and run software. iRecover is a new application we are creating to present the books, movies and tools we presently use in a new, more efficient format. This format can increase the odds of maintaining recovery after treatment, reminding the addict to “keep things on track”, and keep in contact with the
recovery center.

The iPad, while also an excellent tool for recovery, acts as an incentive to reluctant addicts who may not otherwise be willing to enter into a recovery program.

Traditionally the books used at Serenity Ranch are very heavy , and can be abandoned by participants after the program as a result. With the material available on the iPad, several Kilograms of books that fill a book-bag to bursting, now take up just 242.8 mm (9.56 inches) by 189.7 mm (7.47 inches) by 13.4 mm (0.5 inch). This is about the size of one average hardcover book. The iPad weighs just 0.73 kg (1.6 pounds).

All the recovery texts and material associated with the Serenity Ranch classroom, plus the required personal journal that clients are encouraged to keep stores easily on one slick iPad. And it’s so much easier to keep with you after treatment is over. The journal allows one to not only reflect on one’s actions and feelings, but also to recognize patterns in our lives, helping us to cope with change better.

Software on the device encourages graduates to keep in touch through chatting with other Serenity Ranch grads, email, and online meetings with councillors, increasing the chances of staying in recovery and making recovery a way of life.

The iPad is just a small part in the recovery process including excellent councillors, environment and great food/nutrition that makes the addicts difficult transition to recovery a little bit easier. I believe the greatest component in recovery is a strong support system of family and friends, and a willingness to change on the part of the addict.
