This statement is quite common in treatment services, especially in a mixed service that deals with both alcohol and what is considered illicit and non-illicit drug addiction. There are always the stereotype images when the general public thinks of addicts.

12-Step or Harm Reduction Addiction Treatment?

Most practitioners in the addiction field tend to drift into a mindset of picking a “side”. Either you are subscribed to a harm reduction or abstinence based 12-step model. It is fairly rare to find a practitioner working  across the border.  In my case, I did just that. I moved from a harm reduction agency to a 12-step based residential treatment facility.  Oddly, the transition was not as daunting as I expected it to be.

LIMITATIONS: Interventions may not be successful. All individuals must be on the same page in agreeing that treatment is required. The individuals must convey their message in a non-judgmental, non-punitive manner. This may be difficult if underlying anger and resentment is present. A seed may be planted even if they don't seize this opportunity.
